[jira] Created: (HADOOP-800) More improvements to DFS browsing WI

Nick Burch (Jira)
More improvements to DFS browsing WI
------------------------------------

                 Key: HADOOP-800
                 URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-800
             Project: Hadoop
          Issue Type: Improvement
            Reporter: arkady borkovsky

(a) the TITLE of web pages is
     HDFS: <directory name>
or
     HDFS: <file_name>
for directories and files, correspondingly.
trimmed from the right, if too long.
(This helps finding browser windows, tabs, navigating history, and creating bookmarks)

(b) instead of or in addition to "go to parent directory" link, each element of the path displayed at the top of the page should  link to the corresponding directory.
This also saves a line in display.

(c) the file browsing page should not automatically refresh.

(d) it would be nice to use the whole window rather than the text box for viewing.
Wrapping is often harmful.
(These may be a radio-button options option saved in a cookie)

Nick Burch (Jira)

Enis Soztutar updated HADOOP-800:
---------------------------------

    Attachment: improvementsToDFSBrowsing_v1.0.patch

<improvementsToDFSBrowsing_v1.0.patch>
This patch addresses the issues listed above. However only (a) and (b) is fixed. I could not regenerate (c), and i did not understand (d) so i will not submit a patch for them.

(a), now the title for directory and file browsing is HDFS: <directory name> or HDFS: <file_name>
But the long names(more than 50) are trimmed from the left, so that the name of the file or current directory is displayed.

(b) Browsing works similar to nautilus, so that each directory in the path can be clicked. I have not changed goto parent directory option for backwards compatibility.

(c) cannot reproduce

(d) i will not fix

(e)  i have added a text input and a button for direct navigation. A path can be entered here so that we can go directly to this path.

Re: [jira] Updated: (HADOOP-800) More improvements to DFS browsing WI

Arkady Borkovsky-2
In reply to this post by Nick Burch (Jira)
(c) -- the file browsing page should NOT  automatically refresh
it is kind of strange that you cannot reproduce it.  I see it all the
time (the file viewer page gets updated at some interval.  As the
content of the file is in a text box, the position is reset to the
top of block.  Which is annoying).   Not that this is FILE VIEWER
page.  The original description say "file browser" which may be
confusing.

(d) -- in FILE VIEWER page, display the content in the page, rather
than in a text box.
may be this can be provided as an option?  E.g. setting a checkbox in
the directory viewing page?
Or maybe it is possible to make sure that the text box is as wide as
the window?  This would provide the similar functionality.   Although
it would be nice to turn wrapping off.
In so many cases, the narrow text window makes it impossible to look
at the data, and one has to "fds -cat | less" instead, which kind of
defeats the purpose of the UI.

(x) While here:  it would be so nice to add the CURRENT TIME to all
the pages.
For naive users like myself, understanding universal time is very
difficult.  So knowing what the cluster thinks about current time
makes it so much easier to understand when a job has actually started
or ended....

I concur - I work with clusters located in wildly different timezones,
and it would be of tremendous help to see in the UI the machine's notion
of the current time (which sometimes differs even from the current time
in that timezone ;) ).

I think we can move (x) to a seperate issue, since it is a general
requirement not only for dfs.

For (c) and (d), i will check again the code to see what can be done.

Re: [jira] Updated: (HADOOP-800) More improvements to DFS browsing WI

Enis Soztutar
In reply to this post by Enis Soztutar
Hi, i have moved (x) in it's own issue :
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-1370

Unfortunatelly i again was not able to reproduce (c). The resulting html
from so called file viewer(actually browseBlock.jsp) does not contain
any directives to refresh the page, may be you are not using the latest
version of hadoop? Arkady, can you please send me the html of the page
so that i can check again? normally for html documents contain
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="600"> or some javascript to refresh
the page, but as far as i can tell, browseBlock.jsp does not.

Coming to (d), the text from the file is wrapped in a html <textarea> .
The number of rows and columns are required attributes to be given to
this tag. The html looks like :

<textarea cols="100" rows="25" wrap="virtual" READONLY>

//text of the file

</textarea>

we cannot make cols stretch as wide as the window width(because we don't
know!). We can either increase it to say 120 or make it a parameter, but
the latter will seem ugly i think.

Another option like you suggested is to delete the textarea tag, but IMO
it clearly seperates the file's content from the rest of the page, and
also it allows for more compact display of long content.

long story short, I suggest we increase cols to 120 to attack (d).

[jira] Updated: (HADOOP-800) More improvements to DFS browsing WI

In reply to this post by Nick Burch (Jira)

Enis Soztutar updated HADOOP-800:
---------------------------------

    Attachment: improvementsToDFSBrowsing_v1.1.patch

(improvementsToDFSBrowsing_v1.1.patch)

Further investigating the issue i have found that the meta refresh code is not in the browseBlock.jsp(as i guessed) but in tail.jsp. And textarea can be rendered width a style width:100% to attack (d).

So, this patch resolves the sub-issues (a), (b), (c), (d), and (e). a,b and e are the same as the previous. For c i have removed meta refresh from tail.jsp. For d, i have included a style width:100%, so that it is rendered as wide as the window.

Also a related issue is http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-1370 which is discussed in the hadoop-dev.
